Patron Smt. Nirmala Devi Bam Int. Moot Court Competition
Instituted in 2019 in the cherished memory of Smt. Nirmala Devi Bam, the competition stands as a tribute to her enduring values and commitment to education. Since its inception, the moot has steadily grown in stature and reputation, emerging as a hallmark of excellence within the legal education community and earning recognition for its academic depth, organizational precision, and intellectual rigor.
Renowned for its high standards and meticulously structured format, the competition attracts participation from prestigious law colleges and universities across India and abroad, making it a truly international academic forum. The moot is conducted under the esteemed patronage of Hon’ble Justice M.R. Shah, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, whose association adds immense credibility and distinction to the event. Participants are provided a rare and invaluable opportunity to present their arguments before experienced jurists, senior advocates, academicians, and legal professionals, thereby enabling them to test and showcase their legal reasoning, research aptitude, and oral advocacy skills in an environment that closely mirrors real courtroom practice.
The primary objective of the Smt. Nirmala Devi Bam Memorial International Moot Court Competition is to bridge the gap between theoretical legal education and practical courtroom application. The competition is carefully designed to equip participants with essential professional competencies required for successful careers in litigation, academia, policy-making, and allied legal fields. By engaging with complex legal problems and advancing structured arguments through written memorials and oral submissions, students refine their skills in legal research, drafting, analytical reasoning, strategic thinking, advocacy techniques, and courtroom etiquette, while also imbibing the values of professionalism and ethical responsibility.
The competition is open to law students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate law programs, with participation limited to one team per institution to ensure balanced representation. Each team typically comprises two speakers and one researcher, allowing students to specialize in advocacy and research roles. The competition follows a multi-tiered format, beginning with preliminary rounds and progressing through quarter-final, semi-final, and final oral rounds. In addition, a researcher test is conducted to independently assess participants’ depth of legal understanding, research methodology, and analytical precision. Throughout the competition, teams are required to prepare comprehensive memorials and argue both sides of intricate legal propositions, fostering not only advocacy proficiency but also adaptability, ethical reasoning, and strategic legal analysis.
Each edition of the moot court competition is anchored in a contemporary legal theme that reflects pressing issues in modern jurisprudence and evolving global legal challenges. The 2025 edition, in particular, explores dynamic intersections between law, technology, and fundamental rights, offering participants an opportunity to engage with cutting-edge legal debates and emerging areas of jurisprudence. This thematic focus ensures that students remain attuned to current legal developments while developing a forward-looking and globally informed legal perspective.
Over successive editions, the Smt. Nirmala Devi Bam Memorial International Moot Court Competition has evolved into far more than a competitive academic exercise. It has become a transformative educational journey that fosters confidence, sharpens intellect, and nurtures a deep understanding of law and justice. By combining intellectual challenge with professional mentorship, peer collaboration, and experiential learning, the competition continues to uphold its commitment to legal excellence, ethical advocacy, and holistic student development, empowering young legal minds to emerge as competent advocates, thoughtful scholars, and responsible leaders of the legal profession.
